On-Board Courier (OBC) Shipping

Time-critical freight that travels with a courier

On-board courier (OBC) service moves an urgent shipment by having a person travel with it on a commercial flight. It is used when a conventional air freight, expedited ground or courier option cannot meet the deadline. SJX Corporation, operating as SJX Express, can coordinate airport-to-airport and door-to-door OBC assignments, subject to route feasibility, flight availability, shipment restrictions and applicable customs requirements.

Every OBC request is reviewed individually. We cannot guarantee a specific flight, customs clearance or delivery time. The final plan depends on what the airline, the route and the shipment allow.

What on-board courier means

In an OBC move, the shipment stays with an individual courier from pickup to hand-off. The courier typically travels with the shipment on a scheduled commercial flight and delivers it at the destination.

This is different from air cargo, where the shipment is handled by airline and ground staff between the origin and destination.

When OBC may be appropriate

  • A part needed to restart a production line or repair equipment
  • Time-sensitive commercial documents or original paperwork
  • Samples, prototypes or replacement components
  • Items that must arrive on a specific day and cannot wait for the next cargo departure
  • Shipments that need to stay in one person’s custody

If your freight is heavy, bulky or has a longer deadline, expedited freight or standard freight may be a better fit.

Airport-to-airport and door-to-door

Both airport-to-airport and door-to-door OBC assignments are available, subject to route feasibility, flight availability, shipment restrictions and applicable customs requirements. Door-to-door adds pickup and final delivery at each end.

Availability depends on the origin, destination, flight schedules and the courier available for the assignment. We will confirm the planned service level before you approve a quote.

Flights, size and airline limits

An OBC shipment must fit what the airline allows for the courier, including weight, dimensions, packaging and contents. Airline policies differ and change, and some items are restricted or prohibited on passenger aircraft.

Tell us what the shipment is, how much it weighs and its dimensions at the start, so we can check whether OBC is practical.

Customs and cross-border requirements

Cross-border OBC shipments need accurate commercial paperwork, such as an invoice describing the goods and their value. Other documents may apply, depending on the commodity and the route.

Border authorities decide on inspection and clearance, and that can affect timing. Customs brokerage should be arranged with an appropriately authorized provider. See also our cross-border freight page.

Security and custody

Between pickup and hand-off, the shipment stays in the courier’s custody. Shipments can still be screened or inspected by airport security, customs or the airline.

Before booking, we will go over packaging, sealing and the pickup and hand-off details for your shipment.

OBC compared with expedited freight

  • OBC: a person travels with the shipment on a commercial flight. It suits small, urgent, high-priority items.
  • Expedited freight: faster or dedicated transportation arranged through carriers, usually by road. It suits larger, heavier or bulkier loads.

Not sure which fits? Send the request and we will help you compare options.

Frequently asked questions

Can SJX guarantee a flight or a delivery time?

No. Flight availability, airline rules, weather, security screening and customs can all affect an OBC move. We will explain the plan and the risks before you approve a quote.

Does OBC include customs clearance?

Not by default. Customs clearance is handled by authorized customs brokers and border authorities. Tell us early if your shipment crosses a border so we can discuss documentation.

How large can an OBC shipment be?

The limit comes from the airline and the courier’s allowance, so it varies. Send the weight and dimensions with your request.

How do I flag an emergency?

Request a quote, say clearly that it is urgent and give your deadline. Contact details are on our contact page, but send the written request too, because we need the shipment details to assess it.
